Becoming a licensed practical nurse means you will be responsible for a wide variety of clinical tasks and directly involved with patient care. In our Practical Nursing program, you will learn the necessary skills in treating and communicating with patients from accomplished instructors who have years of experience as registered nurses. You will learn and train for the required skills for the healthcare field in our modern facilities and laboratories.

When You Can Learn at Penn Commercial

Classes are forming now, so the best way to get started is by calling 724-222-5330 today or stopping by our campus. Once enrolled, classes are scheduled Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Clinical rotations are scheduled between Monday and Friday at one of our contracted clinical affiliates, and hours may begin as early as 6:00 a.m. and run as late as 11:00 p.m., depending on the needs of the clinical site.

Pennsylvania Licensure

The Practical Nursing curriculum meets the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing Standards and prepares students for licensure through the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX-PN). Most states, including Pennsylvania, have licensure laws that regulate the practice of nursing and proper credentialing is required for employment. Penn Commercial does not guarantee that a student will pass this examination.

The Practical Nursing Program is on provisional status by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.

Between October 1, 2021 and September 30, 2022, 71.22% of program graduates taking the NCLEX-PN administered by the State of PA passed the examination on the first attempt.

Between October 1, 2020 and September 30, 2021, 90.49% of program graduates taking the NCLEX-PN administered by the State of PA passed the examination on the first attempt.

Between October 1, 2019 and September 30, 2020, 90.00% of program graduates taking the NCLEX-PN administered by the State of PA passed the examination on the first attempt.

Between October 1, 2018 and September 30, 2019, 88.24% of program graduates taking the NCLEX-PN administered by the State of PA passed the examination on the first attempt.

Between October 1, 2017 and September 30, 2018, 93.33% of program graduates taking the NCLEX-PN administered by the State of PA passed the examination on the first attempt.

Student Requirements

Those wishing to enroll in the Practical Nursing program will be required by the state to pass specific background checks and a drug test at the student’s expense. Possessing a medical marijuana card does not exempt students from a positive drug test result.

Required background checks:
– Pennsylvania Access to Criminal History (for PA residents) OR West Virginia Criminal Background Check
(CIB) (for WV residents) OR other current state of residency background check
– Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance
– FBI Criminal Background Clearance

The Practical Nursing program requires  a Health Clearance/Physical Form to be completed. Also, due to clinical site requirements, students will need to be current on the following vaccines/titers for communicable diseases prior to entering the clinical component of the program:
– Hepatitis B Titer and vaccination if needed
– Varicella Titer and vaccination if needed
– MMR Titer and vaccination if needed
– T-Spot Testing for Tuberculosis
– TDAP vaccination
– Flu shot
