Medical Assistants play a vital role in the healthcare field. They work right beside doctors and nurses, helping treat people who are often at their most vulnerable.
Penn Commercial's Medical Assistant program will give you the knowledge and skills you'll need to work in a hospital, doctor's office, nursing home, clinic, or other healthcare facility.
You'll learn medical assisting skills, medical law and ethics, anatomy and physiology, human diseases, medical terminology, and pharmacology. You'll also become knowledgeable in the administrative and clinical aspects of a typical medical office.
Some of the typical duties of a Medical Assistant include:
- Performing routine treatment and laboratory duties
- Taking patients' temperature, blood pressure, height and weight measurements
- Assisting in examinations
- Updating and maintaining medical records
- Under a doctor's direction, you may give injections, assist in collecting samples for analysis, and perform standard laboratory tests
- Scheduling appointments and receive patients

Class Schedule
The Medical Assistant program is 18 months in length and consists of theory, laboratory, and externship. Classes are scheduled Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Externships are scheduled during the last quarter of the program and may include Fridays.
Advanced Placement/Test Outs
Any active or newly enrolled student may apply for advanced placement status. Performance test outs may be arranged through the Director of Education on a request basis and must be taken prior to the beginning of the start of the class. Any student who has sat in classes is ineligible for advanced placement. For more details regarding the Advanced Placement Policy, please refer to the Course Catalog.
